Description

Like a sentinel at the Gate, this VMI cannon stands watch against the barracks of Virginia Military Institute, on a crisp autumn day.

Virginia Military Institute located in Lexington, Virginia by the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, close to Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Roanoke Virginia.

In front of the old Barracks is a life-sized statute of General Stonewall Jackson positioned by four red canons and the grave of Gen. Jackson’s horse, Little Sorrel and one of several cannons on the grounds.

Built in 1848, this is the oldest building on the campus. Built in early Gothic Revival architecture, it is a National Historic Landmark.

On the faculty of VMI before the Civil War, Thomas J. Jackson, known as General Stonewall Jackson, and at the time of his death.

Founded in 1839 as America's first state military college and is the oldest public senior military college in the United States. In keeping with its founding principles and unlike any other senior military college in the United States, VMI enrolls cadets only and awards bachelor's degrees exclusively.
