Description

One of the crown jewels of the Lynchburg Roanoke, Virginia area is the Elks National Home, located in Bedford, Virginia. Every Christmas this 200 acre property hosts an unforgettable Christmas light display that has been appreciated by generations of youngsters. This Autumn scenic photo was taken at dusk under impending storm clouds. This is one of my favorite views in the Central Virginia area. It combines three of my favorite subjects, old barns, my beautiful Blue Ridge mountains and scenic moody skies. These barns are located between Lynchburg and Roanoke, Virginia.

English Meadows Elks Home has recently bought the Elks Home and will turn the main building, not pictured here into a nursing facility. The Elks National home was built in 1916 by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, who first started the home in 1903. The Elks National Home historic district includes 23 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, 1 contributing structure, and 2 contributing objects including this dairy barn at the base of the Peaks of Otter surrounded by clouds in the Appalachian Mountains off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sharp Top Mountain is under the storm clouds directly behind the main barn. Flat Top Mountain is shrouded behind the clouds.

The Elks Home is beloved locally for the large display of Christmas decorations it puts up each year. Visitors enter the driveway in their vehicles and slowly proceed through the displays, which line the driveway, free of charge.

The Elks Home was featured briefly in the 1991 film What About Bob?, where it stood in as a mental institution. More of the movie was filmed nearby at Smith Mountain Lake, south of Bedford.

Its 100-acre property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
