Description
I wish I could count the number of times we have walked over the Main River from Frankfurt’s downtown to the neighborhood of Sachsenhausen. It is a wonderful old pedestrian footbridge bridge with great views of the Frankfurt am Main skyline and river below and especially sunsets. Although the Eiserner Steg is one of several bridges that spans across the Main River, the river that intersects Frankfurt’s Sachsenhausen and downtown, it is the only walking bridge.
The first wrought iron bridge was built in 1868. It was replaced in 1911/1912 by a slightly larger cantilever bridge. It is 170 metres long and consists of riveted steel trusses with two bridge piers. The bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht in the final days of World War II, but it was rebuilt shortly afterwards in 1946. It was fully renovated in 1993.
