Description
Pictured is the Rockville South Carolina Windmill located on the Bohicket River on Wadmalaw Island. Settlements in the area can be traced back to the 1600's but the town’s “official” founding date is considered to be 1784. Known as one of only a handful of old fishing villages left along this section of the southern coastline, there is no industry with the exception of a few shrimpers. The town exudes southern charm with its huge live oaks and antebellum homes that were built by the wealthy planters and of course this picturesque windmill still in use.
Following the Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the local chapel was used by Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, to treat injuries of people in the area.
