Description
Pictured is Grace Episcopal Church in Rockville, South Carolina located on the Bohicket River on Wadmalaw Island. Settlements in the area can be traced back to the 1600's but the town’s “official” founding date is considered to be 1784. Known as one of only a handful of old fishing villages left along this section of the southern coastline, there is no industry with the exception of a few shrimpers. The town exudes southern charm with its huge live oaks and antebellum homes that were built by the wealthy planters.
Grace Episcopal Chapel, originally known as the Church on the Rock, was built in 1840 for $1500 as a “chapel of ease” to serve those families who spent their summers in the village of Rockville to escape the heat. The church survived the Civil War when many in the area did not. The church was moved in 1884 because of a title dispute. Following the Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the chapel was also used by Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, to treat injuries of people in the area.
