It was the summer of wildfires. We almost canceled our trip to Banff in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, but decided to go anyway, hopeful we might find some way to avoid the smoke. The trip required several adjustments. The one photograph I wanted to get was a shoot over Moraine Lake at sunset and then get the Milky Way over the mountains over night. We headed up to the classic viewing site...spending hours and hours overnight to get the perfect shot. It didn't happen.

What did happen was a shot in the opposite direction, the sunset, vivid colors of orange to raspberry to purple caused by the smoke heading over the mountains, releasing particulates in the air which catch the reflected light in the opposite direction. Often after fires, sunsets are above and beyond normal colors.

Glaciers are essentially rivers of ice that push rocky debris along in their wake, The picture here shows some of the rocky debris left behind as the glacier retreated, This debris is known as a moraine.

Here is a reminder when you are set to head in a certain direction, sometimes it pays to turn around and make sure you don't need to make a course correction!
