Description
I have a friend who asked me to get a photograph with a train if possible with the engine at Morant's Curve in the Canadian Rockies. I thought...no problem. The train tracks are adjacent to a nearby road and only required a small slide down the hillside. But there are no schedules, so I waited, waited and waited some more. For hours I waited. There were several trains, but they were traveling in the opposite direction. Finally near sunset my train appeared. This was the year of the fires. The smoke from the fires is visible over the mountains, especially on the right side of the photograph and in the lower areas of the valley at the base of the mountains.
The train was a General Electric engine AC44, an oil train through the Rockies!
Morant's Curve is named for Nicholas Morant, a staff photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. For 44 years, he crisscrossed the country on passenger trains. He photographed hotels, steamships, trucks, airplanes, oil wells, and mines, for the CPR train line. He chronicled the times, writing for the company magazine as well as photographing developments on the railway. His photos have been used on the backs of $10, $50 and $100 Canadian bills.
Despite all his travels across the country, this unique spot in the Rocky Mountains was his favorite to capture trains, and is now called Morant's Curve. You have the Rocky Mountains in the background with the train track nicely curved to feature the train.
Morant's Curve is just a few minutes outside of Lake Louise and just about an hour from Banff.
Haddo Peak, Saddle Mountain, Fairview Mountain are in the background.
Also available in color.
