Description

If you've seen my other photographs, you know I love to roam and meander when I am in a new place. This day we were discovering a cute town near Montgomery, Alabama known as Wetumpka. Photographers plan their locations, but I like to leave time to discover. At this time we happened by a swap near sunset and the colors were wonderful as they sometimes are at that time of the day. I loved the greenery of the lily pads against the Autumn colors.

Wetumpka was near Fort Toulouse, built by French colonists in 1717, when they had claimed this territory for the king. This swamp is located in Fort Toulouse in Jackson Park.

The name Wetumpka is derived from the Creek phrase meaning "rumbling waters", believed to be a description of the sound of the nearby Coosa River at the rapids of the Devil's Staircase. The roar of the rapids reportedly could be heard for miles before the construction in the 20th century of Walter Bouldin Dam and Jordan Dam, when the river was captured as a reservoir behind the dam.

After being forced west to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), by United States soldiers under the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the Muscogee named their major settlement there Wetumka, after their historic village.
