I sat and watched the clouds develop camera in hand on our daughter's balcony in Frankfurt, Germany, the skyline from Sachsenhausen, part of Frankfurt across the Main River from this skyscraper. The clouds seemed to hold some promise, but I have been disappointed before waiting for mother nature to do her thing. Tonight was not one of those times. Just look at those beams of light! Mother Nature sure is some artist!
Frankfurt am Main has some wonderful skyscrapers, but among the best on my list is the Westhaven Skyscraper, part of a new quarter of the city in what used to be Westhafen. Depending on the time of day, the aqua glass color in the tower can change in an instant.
My grandson calls it the “apple wine tower”, because it's transparent, greenish shimmering glass façade resembles a glass of apple wine. In fact, the glass triangles are supposed to suggest the element water with the different light reflections they create. Completed in 2003, at 325 ft. the tower has 31 floors and is used for offices. In total the tower has 3,556 triangular glass elements, giving each office a transparent view of the surrounding city.
The tower is part of the Westhafenplatz plaza and represents the beginning of the West Harbor city quarter development.
Not too bad to go to work here!
