Description
Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve, specifically their boneyard beach of dead trees and salt marshes had been on my list to photograph while we were camping north of Charleston, but I couldn't have planned for the conditions I encountered. We arrived at sunrise to find that the Edisto Island's Botany Bay Preserves Plantation didn't open up at sunrise in December. So I had to wait until the rangers arrived.
Then I found out dogs were not allowed which meant my hubby had to stay behind with our dog, Honey.
The next hurtle was the flooded path from Edisto Island to Botany Bay as a result of a full moon and high tides. So I waited for the tide flood conditions to labate. While I waited the lighting got lighter and lighter. Several people ventured through this path flooded with water. a father and his almost grown son making their way through chest high water. This is the path.
Older and wiser I knew not to try to carry expensive photo equipment through the flooded conditions risking a slip and fall. I don't recover from such conditions like I did when I was younger.
The 4,600-acre preserve includes almost three miles of undeveloped, breathtaking beachfront. There are two small islands you have to cross to get to the beach. This the first path required to cross.
South Carolina's sea islands encompass pine hardwood forests, agricultural fields, coastal wetlands and Atlantic Ocean beachfront barrier islands. Only this tract has been left undisturbed, providing coastal habitat for wildlife species, including loggerhead sea turtles, and a variety of birds.
