One of the most interesting stops on our one week stay near Banff, Canada had to have been Maligne Canyon. Maligne Canyon, located in the Canadian Rockies, is a slotted canyon located in the Jasper National Park near Jasper, Alberta, Canada north of Banff. Eroded out of the Palliser Formation, the canyon measures over 160 ft deep. Popular for sightseeing and exploration, the area contains waterfalls, underground stream outlets, birds and plant life.
In the greater Pacific Northwest, Maligne Canyon is seen as different and odd geologically, but is common within the northern Rocky Mountains. These canyons show the characteristic of Karst topography, common in this region due to its easily soluble nature. Flowing out of Medicine Lake, the Maligne River flows about 10 miles upstream as a full size river, but quickly disappears into seeps in the ground and completely vanishes from the surface not far from the lake for most of the year. Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better.
