Norway was the birthplace of my father-in-law. We have visited here a number of times. Without a doubt it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Lofoten Islands where this photo was taken is an archipelago of islands. Although located in the arctic, the winter temperatures are not terribly cold, controlled by the warmer sea currents nearby. Two nearby locations, lights visible in this photo are Reine and Sakrisoya Island.
The sun does not rise between early December to January 7 making photography a bit of a challenge. This picture was taken January 14, so the sun was above the horizon for a short time near noon. I had hoped to see the northern lights, but clouds and high winds prevented their appearance. We booked and stayed in roburer during our visit. These old cabins were used by the local cod fishermen and can be rented. Winter, especially in December and January is not tourist season except for the few photographers who choose to visit for the fabulous views...
Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better. Gradually as my photography got better, I was further encouraged to move to selling and becoming a professional. We are surrounded by beauty, but so much isn't noticed.
