Description
A large, gangly waterbird, the Double Breasted Cormorant comes with a long kinked swivel neck and spread it's wings to dry because of a lack of oils in it's feathers. They have a long serrated hooked bill, orange at the top of the beak, a lighter feathered breast. Because they are heavy they sit low in the water. Photo taken near McClellanville, South Carolina!
These birds are also excellent swimmers with strong stubby legs. The cormorant has the ability to submerge its body into the water where all that is seen is its head.
There are six species native to North America.
