Located in Val di Funes in the heart of the Italian Dolomite Mountains, nothing prepares you for the interior you see when you enter the Church of Maddalena. The simple tiny, charming Gothic church set against the gorgeous mountains, the Alto Adige off in the distance masques the Baroque, gilt detailed interior.
Legend has it that following a violent storm, a mirage of the saint appeared by the waters of the Rio Fopal. Sacrifices to the pagan gods took place here, probably since prehistoric times.
The first documents that mention the existence of the church date back to 1394, probably when it was built. It was totally rebuilt in 1492, keeping only the bell tower of the old structure. During the eighteenth century it was restored again in a Baroque style.

Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better.
