Description
Heading to Cataloochee to camp in our tiny travel trailer, we had no idea the road was as twisty and rough as it was. From the entrance of the road off a paved road, it was 45 minutes over roads like this, around tight turns, up an down the steep mountain, the road only wide enough for one car. And we were in a car and 20' trailer. What an adventure it was. We made the trip 6 times. One of those times was in the morning when the weather threatened to be rainy all day, but the fog yielded photographs like this one with the Autumn colors peaking through, shrouded with blueish haze. I found the scene charming!
Cataloochee Valley, first settled by the indians, is nestled among some of the most rugged mountains in the southeastern United States. Surrounded by 6000-foot peaks, this isolated valley was one of the largest and most prosperous settlements in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some 1,200 people lived in this lovely mountain valley in 1910. Most made their living by farming, including commercial apple growing.
