One of the most visable churches in Amsterdam is within view of the Centraal Train Station. Basilica of St. Nicholas (Sint Nicolaaskerk) just across the water from the station. Pictured is the Oudezijds Voorburgwal Canal in Red Light District looking up the canal toward the church.
Completed in 1887, the church, named after the patron saint of Amsterdam, was elevated to basilica status in 2012, making it the only one in the city. A combination of baroque and Dutch neo-Renaissance, the basilica is one of the city’s most important 19th-century ecclesiastical monuments. Two tall towers frame the dark-brown façade. Between them, a rose window features a sculpted bas relief of Christ. An octagonal dome rises 190’, topped by a lantern and a cross. The largest 19th-century German organ graces the interior.During a subsequent restoration, the even dark church had been given more light in the form of new stained-glass windows.

Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better.
