Artist's Description

I've loved this barn for years, but have just now photographed and researched it to share with others.

Build in the late 1800's this iconic Pittsylvania County red tobacco barn off route 29, in Blairs, Virginia, north of Danville, Virginia has been a reminder of the historical and economic significance of tobacco in southside Virginia.

This two part barn served as a combined curing and packing barn. The curing barn section, made of hand-hewn logs, was used to flue-cure bright-leaf tobacco leaves that were hung inside the barn on tier poles. The pack barn section was used to store and grade cured tobacco leaves before they were taken to the market. The pack barn section also has what is referred to as an "ordering pit"—a damp pit where cured leaves were placed to collect moisture so that they would be pliable enough for easy handling.

Nearby north of Blairs, Lynchburg, Virginia was once the 2nd most wealthy city in the United States behind New Bedford, Massassac...

Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better. Gradually as my photography got better, I was further encouraged to move to selling and becoming a professional. We are surrounded by beauty, but so much isn't noticed.
