Did you know Venice is comprised of over 100 islands? I had no idea how many either. My feet will tell you there are many to be sure. Walking on cobbled streets is always a challenge, This is the reason why there are so many canals and bridges. But the most famous of all is the Ponte di Rialto Bridge. There are only four bridges that transverse the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge is one of tonly four bridges that transverse the Grand Canal, so that is a reason why it is so popular. Waht to see it at it's best? Night time it is lit with perfection and there are fewer people around.

The Rialto Bridge, also known as Ponte di Rialto and Ponte de Rialto is the oldest connecting the sestieri districts of San Marco and San Polo, it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction as a pontoon bridge in 1173, and is the most popular.

The first bridge was made of wood and maintenance was an issue. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, began to be constructed in 1588 and was completed in 1591. It is similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. Two ramps lead up to a central portico. On either side of the portico, the covered ramps carry rows of shops.
