Description

North Carolina tobacco barns numbered a half million and were fixtures on farms across the state. Today, only about 50,000 still stand, vestiges of the tobacco industry, reminders of the tobacco industry's influence in the past. This one is located north of Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina in a rural farming area.

Most barns were tall, plain, 20-feet-by-20-feet square buildings built of hewn logs and mortar, or sawn timber with tin roofs and overhanging porch like structures that often stored and protected farm equipment.

Tobacco barns usually have roof ventilators, and sometimes clerestory-style vents that run almost the length of the roof ridge, or sometimes evenly spaced cylindrical vents with conical tops. Their interiors have framing in bents about 10-15 feet apart on which laths loaded with tobacco leaves can be hung.

I found particular charming example along with the old tractor in a setting off the road with a number of farm outbuildings, all old.
