Description
Strolling down the small hillside alleys of Montepulciano is like strolling down an open air art museum with statues carved wall artwork like this charming, heraldic lion, Leone di Palazzo Avignonesi a Montepulciano, the lion of Montepulciano, the symbol of Florence found on the Palace of Avignonesi. Piazza Savonarola is the home of two elegant palazzi, the first is the Palazzo Avignonesi (the palazzo with the two lion heads flanking the entrance. I love his intensive stare and snarl emanating from his expressive mouth. The building is by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, the late Renaissance architect who designed Rome’s Villa Giulia.
I captured this charming lion in color, but found black and a white a better medium for him. There is some evidence that he once was a fountain, with the hole in his mouth and water stains under his hairy chin.
He reminds me of the Cowardly Lion with Judy Garland in the movie, Wizard of Oz.
Montepulciano was founded by Porsenna, king of the Etruscans, although the oldest documents testify to the existence of the city from 714-715 A.D., when a "Politioum Castle" was cited in the documents regarding a dispute between the bishops of Siena and Arezzo for the possession of eighteen parishes.
There was a settlement early in the town's existence, the current walls were in place by the 1400's to 1500's.
We happened to be be there during the festival in the Autumn when there is a competition to roll a barrel of wine up the hill, with bragging rights for the following year.
Montepulciano has long been known for it's fine wines and is considered to be the King of wines having earned the first DOC certification granted in 1966, evidence of a stellar wine.
