Description
Zaandam was a close bus ride from downtown Amsterdam we were staying for a few days to visit our grandson. The weather was less than ideal in January with constant storms and cold winds coming from the west, enough to shake my camera gear. I was afraid the pictures I was shooting would lack character in the dead of winter, but I was so wrong. The plains around Amsterdam are wonderfully lit near sunset, even if the sun only peaks out for moments and then finishes off with a flourish with drenching rain. I image in spring these same fields are overgrown with bright Dutch bulbs, but this cold winter day, the birds were the subject against the lonely small windmill against a cloudy sky with just a hint of sunset color showing through.
