Description
It was a day of contrasts, bright and sunny in the morning, deep clouds and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, perfect for mountain captures. We arrived at the Sella Pass in the Italian Dolomites to find a running road race was under way. There were crowds, ambulances, high winds, rain, sleet and snow. It was a miserable time for both runners and photographers, but the photography was fabulous. We are a hardy band of warriors out to get the photograph.
The Sella Pass, Passo Sella) (2218 m) is a high mountain pass, over 7,200 ft. between the provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol in Italy.
Located in the Italian Dolomites, the winding road to the summit, also known as Sellajoch, is paved, with sharp hairpin bends and steep drops. It’s called Strada Statale 242 road. The pass links the Val Gherdëina in South Tyrol and Canazei in the Fascia Valley in Trentino.
With Pordoi Pass, Gardena Pass, and Campolongo Pass, this pass forms a quadrangle around the Sella group. In the winter, ski trails are prepared that make the entire round in both directions, known as the Sella Ronda.
The pass has been featured in the Giro d’Italia. It’s one of the most famous passes in the Dolomites. The average percentage drop is 6.8 %. The maximum grade is 12.5% The views are stunning and each small village you go through is charming and lovely.
The road to the summit was opened on 26th of October 1856 and its construction dates back to 1843 with a hotel located near the peak of the road pass.
Also available in color.
This area near the sites of the 2026 Olympics in Cortina!
The Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel is a beacon of history located in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. In 1909 the Terminal Station opened as the first railway station in the South, designed in the famous Beaux Arts style. The Choo Choo Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and remains one of the city’s first historic preservation projects.Guests can eat in a fine hotel restaurant located in back of the hotel in old railroad cars or a number of eateries in the main railroad lobby located in the old train station pictured here.
I had a chance to capture this iconic sign trying to travel from our home in Virginia to New Orleans in our camping trailer, when suddenly Covid 19 hit. We stopped a few days in Chattanooga and then turned around and went home when our camping spot was cancelled in New Orleans. This sign will always be a memory of those times.
This sign would be very cute in a child's or grandchild's bedroom or for anyone who loves trains or train memorabilia.
