Description
Savannah has several modern art pieces, one of these is the Savannah Ship Memorial three-masted Barquentine ship the Peacemaker docked along the Savannah River on River Street. In the sun the water droplets sparkle, adding texture to the display.
The original model for this sculpture, Peacemaker Barquentine, originally named Avany, was built on a riverbank in southern Brazil using traditional methods and tropical hardwoods, and was launched in 1989. The original owner and his family motored in the southern Atlantic Ocean before bringing the ship up through the Caribbean to Savannah, Georgia, where they intended to rig it as a three-mast staysail Marconi rigged motor sailer. The work was never done, however, and in the summer of 2000, she was purchased by the Twelve Tribes, a religious group with 50 or so communities in North and South America, Europe, and Australia
There are at least tow of these sculputures in Savannah, one on the riverfront and one in the market district.
It was a rainy overcast day in the Winton M. Blount Cultural Park, Montgomery, Alabama. Touring with friends in the area I saw this wonderful sculpture off in the distance as it was pouring rain outside. Not to be dissuaded I jumped out of the car and caught this sculpture of running frocking kids jumping over a puddle against one of the museums.
