If you've traveled through my photographs, you already know I like to meander where ever we visit, down hidden roads, through tiny villages, stopping as my interests gets peaked. This particular day we were in the Champagne Region of the Italian hills, along the Prosecco Road in Rolle at dinner time. It was time to stop and smell the wine, so to speak and get a bite to eat in this tiny hamlet, picture perfect, just waiting for our tired bodies to find her.
Italy's famous sparkling prosecco wine comes from vineyards that cover this picturesque valley, just north of Venice in the region known as Veneto. While Champagne refers to a region, prosecco is the name of the grape that is grown on rolling hills that stretch from the town of Valdobbiadene past Treviso and Conegliano, as far as Vittorio Veneto.
The tiny hamlet of Rolle in a UNESCO region, has to be the most beautiful spot along the Prosecco Road. Rolle became the first Italian village protected by the Italian Environmental Fund in 2004.
This tiny village located south of Cison di Valmarino was defined by the Italian poet Andrea Zanzotto "as being a postcard sent by the Gods."
Within few miles, it is possible to reach San Pietro di Feletto, Refrontolo, Arfanta, Corbanese, Conegliano and Sarano or artistic treasures such as the Croda windmill, the Follina Abbey, the Conegliano castle, the Cison di Valmarino castle, the Caves del Caglieron of Vittorio Veneto and the cellars of Valdobbiadene.
We stopped at a small renowned restaurant, Da Andreetta in the village, overlooking this wonderful view of the adjoining vineyards snaking down the hillsides. The resturant is pictured just to the left of the bell tower, We had a wonderful meal on their petunia covered terrace, lucky to have gotten a last minute table near sunset, sipping a local prosecco and then headed back home in the dark.
