Description
The Peaks of Otter Lodge, between Lynchburg and Roanoke Virginia has a .2 mile boardwalk with a continuing disabled access paved path around Abbott Lake which leads to a scenic deck overlook surrounded by beauty, especially beautiful at dawn and sunset. The towering pines reach to the sky reflected in the sparkling waters of Abbott Lake, majestic peaks of Sharp Top and Flat Top Mountains are breathtaking. This is a favorite stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway for good reason.
Spend a few days here, take a picnic basket, a bottle of your favorite wine and enjoy a romantic meal overlooking the lake or hike the nearby mountains and trails escaping the hustle and bustle of every day life.
The Peaks of Otter Lodge has a long and storied history dating back to the early 1800s. The area was first settled by Thomas Wood in 1766, and his descendants soon opened an "Ordinary" (lodging for travelers) in their log cabin.
In the 1830s, Polly Wood, a widow, opened an even larger inn called the "Mountain View Hotel." This hotel was a popular destination for travelers and tourists, and it helped to establish the Peaks of Otter as a popular resort destination.
In the 1870s, Benjamin Wilkes built the Mons Hotel, which was the largest and most luxurious hotel in the area. The Mons Hotel was a popular destination for wealthy travelers, and it helped to further establish the Peaks of Otter as a premier resort destination.
The Mons Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1920, but it was rebuilt a few years later. However, the hotel closed for good in 1935.
In 1964, the Peaks of Otter Lodge was built on the site of the Mons Hotel. The lodge was designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, and it quickly became a popular destination for hikers, campers, and nature lovers.
The Peaks of Otter Lodge has been renovated and updated several times over the years, but it still retains its rustic charm.
Taken in early spring, the light green and yellow trees are just beginning to bud out, the yellow daffodils visible under the trees adjoining the boardwalk.
