Description
Stunning 360 degree views are around this Alpi Giau pass near Ra Gusela in the Trentino-alto Adige area of the Dolomites in Italy, a prime ski area. On this day the weather was terrible ... snow, sleet, rain and stunning clouds all while a running road race was being held. High winds added to the misery, but perfect conditions for a photographer.
The Giau Pass at about 7,000 ft is a high mountain pass in the Dolomites in the province of Belluno in Italy. It connects Cortina d'Ampezzo with Colle Santa Lucia and Selva di Cadore. You are above the tree line here.
It is located at the center of a vast mountain pasture at the foot of Nuvolau and dell'Averau from which you can easily reach the Monte Pore. Impressive is the view west towards Colle Santa Lucia with the Pale di San Martino, Cime D'Auta, Marmolada, Piz Boe and Setsass, just to the east towards the valley of Cortina d'Ampezzo, with Tofane, Croda Rossa, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Croda da Lago. At the base of the mountain is the Giau Pass Hotel on the left.
The road that goes up from Selva di Cadore has 29 tornanti (switch backs or turns) and 3 tunnels for protection against avalanches, while the side towards Cortina is more easily passable. It is an interesting alternative to get to Cortina from Agordino area also because the road of Passo Giau, unlike the Passo Falzarego road is passable by trucks and coaches. However, despite the efforts made over the years, the winter season is often compromised by the avalanches that come down to block the uncovered parts of the road.
I loved the starkness of the land here. There is nothing to buffer you from the elements at this elevation.

Cinque Torri, 2361 m. The famous five self-standing rocks, very popular for climbing.
Averau, 2649 m. A dominant, tower-like mountain in the centre of the main ridge.
Croda Negra (Punta Gallina), 2518 m. A ridge mountain west of Averau.
Monte Pore, 2405 m. An elevation on the very south.
