Description
My favorite historic area in Lynchburg, Virginia has got to be the Old City Cemetery in downtown, which began life as a black cemetery and a place of repose both for the dead and living. Perched on a high hillside in downtown Lynchburg, it was a place families could find relaxation and cooler temperatures in the heat of the summer before the advent of air-conditioning.
The cemetery is known for its antique roses and other plants and for it's Confederate graveyard which is a cemetery within a cemetery. There are several old museums. a chapel and a scatter garden.
There are an abundance of Lenten Roses which begin blooming as early as Christmas and are known as Helleborus. This one is pictured on one of the beautiful, old antique textured walls found within the cemetery.
