Description
We traveled from Frankfurt, Germany to the coastline of Normandy, France and then to Brittany and up to Amsterdam and then back to Frankfurt. One of the places on my bucket list was the small town of Étretat, France separated from Britain by the English Channel. The views are stunning over the waters, especially as the day comes to an end. These chalk cliffs were once a part of the cliffs seen in England before a split happened sometime in the past.
Étretat is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in Northwestern France. Known for it's tourist and farming close to Le Havre. Pictured is Porte d'Aval arch and L'Aiguille (the Needle), a pillar which rises 70 metres (230 ft) above the sea.
Étretat is known for being the last place in France from which the 1927 biplane The White Bird (L'Oiseau Blanc) was seen. French World War I war heroes Charles Nungesser and François Coli were attempting to make the first non-stop flight from Paris to New York City, but after the plane's 8 May 1927 departure, it disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic. It is considered one of the great unexplained mysteries of aviation.
The famous painter Claude Monet spent a lot of time in this area.
