Description

Just look at that view! This is Mt. Piana ( mont Piana, Monte Piano, Mt Piano) in the Italian Dolomite Alps, not too far from Misurina. They are stunning. There is a small lake at the base called Durrensee, but the mountain are the show here. Monte Piana is a 2,324-metre (7,625 ft) tall mountain in the Sexten Dolomites and located on the border between the provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno. The smaller Northern summit of the mountain is named Monte Piano.

During World War 1, the most treacherous battle of the war was founght here between the Austrians and the Italians. Can you even begin to imagine what it took to scale these mountains as a soldier to get to the high ground?

One of the most treacherous battles of World War 1 was fought in those mountains between the Austrian and Italian Army. Over 5000 men are buried in the Pasubio Ossuary, a stone tower mass grave site there.

In the spring of 1916, the Austrians swept down through these mountains. Had they reached the Venetian plain, they could have marched on Venice and encircled much of the Italian Army, breaking what had been a bloody yearlong stale mate. But the Italians stopped them here.

Before the battle 600 Italians’ built a series of 52 Tunnels and a four-mile donkey path, a third of which runs inside the mountains over ten months in 1917 only to get slaughtered in those same mountains. The Austrian border is mear a few miles away north of here.

You are looking at one of the most beautiful places on earth and one of the most horrible.
