Imagine waking up to the sight of a fiery orange sun rising over the snow-capped peaks of the Norwegian Lofoten Islands on the other side of the cabins. This was our home away from home in several locations up and down the Islands in the Arctic.

The sky is ablaze with color, from the deep purples and blues of twilight to the brilliant golds and pinks of sunrise. This time of the year, sunrise and sunset happen within minutes of each other in mid-January. The Rorbuer (Rorbu or Rorburer) huts, traditional fishermen's cabins, stand like sentinels on the shore, their wooden sides glowing in the morning light. The air is crisp and cold, and the only sound is the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. Off in the distance you can see the cod fish drying racks, empty this time of the year. Norway is truly a country with gorgeous natural beauty.
