Description
Locorotondo Italy in Puglia is perhaps the most charming of the whitewashed city in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia.
This municipality had many names before the present one. Initially it was called Casale San Giorgio (in honor of the patron saint), then Casale Rotondo, later Luogorotondo and only in 1834 was it called Locorotondo. The name recalls the characteristic shape of the historic center, a set of small white houses arranged in concentric round rings. Another hypothesis derives the name from the late Latin Locus Rotundus, round place.
At the base of the white round city of Locorotondo sits the Church of St. Anna di Renna. The church of Saint Anna, also known as the hospital, is believed to have been built during the sixteenth century with the name of Santa Maria dei Martiri. In 1880, after the construction of the hospital, which took place in 1873, the chapel underwent changes on the outside, replacing the original cummerse (sloping roofs with masonry) with a terrace, making the entire building assume a square shape. The ancient carved stone rose window remains on the façade and, if you pay attention, you can see the original masonry under the nineteenth-century one. Upon entering, there are pointed cross vaults, arranged along a single nave without interruption on squat medevial looking pillars . In the small apse there is a fresco of Jesus enthroned with a late Gothic air. At the same point was added a canvas of the Nativity of the Virgin by the Martinese painter Leronimo de Jesu dating back to the mid-seventeenth century, which disappeared towards the end of the nineteenth century as another fresco was located on the left wall.
