Description
Our visit to Italy included a s few days along the Prosecco Road, south of the Dolomite Mountains, north of Venice. We stayed in the village of Collalto. I found the pediment over the local church's main entrance doorway charming and decided to make it into a Christmas card.
A tympanum (plural, tympana; from Greek and Latin words meaning "drum") is the semi-circular or triangular decorative wall surface over an entrance, door or window, which is bounded by a lintel and an arch. It often contains pedimental sculpture or other imagery or ornaments. Many architectural styles include this element.
Alternatively, the tympanum may hold an inscription, or in modern times, a clock face.
In ancient Greek, Roman and Christian architecture, tympana of religious buildings often contain pedimental sculpture or mosaics with religious imagery.[4] A tympanum over a doorway is very often the most important, or only, location for monumental sculpture on the outside of a building. In classical architecture, and in classicising styles from the Renaissance onwards, major examples are usually triangular; in Romanesque architecture, tympana more often has a semi-circular shape, or that of a thinner slice from the top of a circle, and in Gothic architecture they have a more vertical shape, coming to a point at the top. These shapes naturally influence the typical compositions of any sculpture within the tympanum.
Remains in the area indicate, the area has been inhabited since Prehistoric times, dating back to the Roman civilization and colonization of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, the main centre developed around a small fortress, built on the summit of a hill.
Originally the village of Collalto owned the church. For a brief period in the XIII century, ownership was assigned to a local noble family, Col San Martino, but soon after returned to the Collalto. Subsequently the control over the territory was granted to the Ramponi of Feltre, and later, like most of the lands of the Treviso area was under the domain of the Venetian Serenissima Republic from the XIV century until the age of Napoleon.
The Church of San Martino, was originally built around year 1000, it was rebuilt in 1927 after suffering damage during World War II. Today, it features an octagonal floor plan.
The House of Collalto is an old and distinguished Austro-Italian noble house of Lombard origin, named after their seat at Collalto in Susegana, now in the Province of Treviso in Italy. Throughout its history, the house had their possessions in Italy, Austria and Moravia.
