Description

The Francis Marion National Forest is located north west of Charleston, South Carolina, near McClellanville. It is named for revolutionary war hero Francis Marion, who was known to the British as the Swamp Fox. It lies entirely within the Middle Atlantic coastal cyprus swamp forest eco-region, near McClellanville, South Carolina. Pictured here is Wambaw Creek, part of the Francis Marion Forest in Autumn.

It was sorely by accident I happened on these Cyprus tree groves at the height of Autumn leaf season to catch their wonderful colors being reflected in the waters.

The Francis Marion is a forest literally steeped in history. Today the Francis Marion National Forest remains a lush landscape of pine stands and wildlife-filled swamps and marshes shaded by towering bald cypress trees. Four wilderness areas, one with a marked canoe trail, offer visitors a unique opportunity to glimpse the wild landscape as it might have appeared earlier in history.

The lush landscape offers a wonderful array of colors, textures and reflections, enough to make a landscape hunter's hear go wild.
