Artist's Description

Down this winding, rustic road on the horizon in Etretat is the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Garde. This neo-Gothic chapel and its hull-shaped nave refers to the vocation of a place of worship for the sailors of the Etretat.

The church has silhouettes of stone, topped with a roof with two slopes, covered with slate, and facades in freestone, adorned with fish head gargoyles.

It was built following a mission preached by Reverend Father Michel in 1854, the inhabitants decided to build a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.

The sailors carried the materials for the building on their backs and arms.
On August 6, 1856, it was blessed as a chapel for fishermen and sailors.

The German occupier decided to destroy it in 1942.

It is only after its reconstruction in 1950, that it will be renamed under its current name of “Notre Dame de la Garde” during a blessing made by Monsignor Martin, then Archbishop of Rouen and under the aegis of René Coty, Vice P...

Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better. Gradually as my photography got better, I was further encouraged to move to selling and becoming a professional. We are surrounded by beauty, but so much isn't noticed.
