Telluride Colorado, part of the Uncompahgre National Forest...a day of mistakes and lessons learned on this ridge overlooking Mount Wilson. Being under the weather doesn't give a photographer a pass to shortcut common sense and care. This day I added to lessons learned. I was sick from my seatmate on the plane and wanted to be in bed, but instead was on the edge of this bluff mountain gorge, overlooking a Colorado plateau, sunset storms fast appearing. I wondered which would get here first, not understanding that the wind would win. A photographer next to me appeared from his van, set up quickly on the edge, less than a foot off the ground, weights holding his equipment down, and went back to his van to rest. In my early photographic ignorance, I set up higher and had no weights. I went back to my car to lay down waiting for the lighting to improve.

Mother Nature had her way with me that day. A heavy wind blew up the hillside knocking over my expensive gear, breaking a long zoom lens I had bought a week before. It was an expensive lesson I learned, one I think of years later as I photograph in bad weather or weather that has the potential to change on a dime. Prepare for disaster before it happens not after. I hope you enjoy my expensive photograph! I do take solace that it could have been way worse. I could have ruined the camera, or had all the gear blown off the mountain. :0
