Description
I stop in every couple of years to view the progress of the various digs that are ongoing in Jamestown, Virginia. They are of interest to me because my relative Thomas West, Lord de la Warr is thought to be buried there. He was the first appointed governor of Virginia. His name was also imparted to the Indian Tribe, the Delaware Indians, the state of Delaware and the Delaware River. His wife's name Cicely Shirley has imparted her name to Shirley Plantation and the Shirley Pewter Shop.
His wife never did come to Jamestown or the new world because she didn't think Jamestown was proper for an English Lady.
Thomas West died on his way back to the colonies on board ship. It was thought for years his body was buried at sea, but is now thought he was buried at Jamestown.
The river has risen and part of the original settlement is now in the river, so his body may never be found. His uncle and his brother's body have been found buried in Jamestown.
This plaque is located in the Jamestown Church on one of the walls there.
Jamestown Church, constructed in brick from 1639 onward, in Jamestown in the Mid-Atlantic state of Virginia, is one of the oldest surviving building remnants built by Europeans in the original thirteen colonies and in the United States overall. It is now part of Historic Jamestown, and is owned by Preservation Virginia (formerly known as the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities). There have been several sites and stages in the church's history, and its later tower is now the last surviving above-ground structure from the days when Jamestown was the capital of Virginia. The current structure, active as part of the Anglican church, is still in use today. The ruins are currently being researched by members of the Jamestown Rediscovery project.
It was a rainy overcast day in the Winton M. Blount Cultural Park, Montgomery, Alabama. Touring with friends in the area I saw this wonderful sculpture off in the distance as it was pouring rain outside. Not to be dissuaded I jumped out of the car and caught this sculpture of running frocking kids jumping over a puddle against one of the museums.
