Description
We passed by this lake several times traveling north from Banff and Canmore trying to get away from the summer wildfires and the smoke they generate. On one trip, the smoke had cleared enough to catch Peyto Lake near sunset. The turquoise color of this glacial lake captures sediment from the hillsides and that sediment is fine enough to linger in the water which creates the milky turquoise colors. This Canadian, Alberta lake resembles a wolf head. This is one of the best views of the lake, which allows you to see the unique wolf head shape. The view is Bow Summit, the highest point along the Icefields Parkway. The lake was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.
