This is the third in my series of the Brightwell Gristmill located in Amherst County, Virginia. Also available in color, BW or sepia. This old mill was constructed in the early 1800's and originally began life with a wooden dam which was swept away in 1943, right before several men at the mill were supposed to report for duty in the military. They applied for a temporary deferment which was granted to quickly rebuild the mill and upgrade the dam to one made of stone.

Like many photographers, I didn't begin the process becoming a professional photographer, as a conscious decision. The decision was a linear progression over many years. I like to travel, so naturally would photograph to document our travels. My before retirement job required I learn the basics of photography and programming using a point and shoot camera. The move to professional photography changed over time. I was encouraged to buy a better camera as my photographs got better. Gradually as my photography got better, I was further encouraged to move to selling and becoming a professional. We are surrounded by beauty, but so much isn't noticed.
